Ford and General Motors first announced that they would team up to develop two new transmission back in 2013. Now, as 2017 rolls around, we’re seeing the true fruits of their labor. General Motors unveiled plans to launch 10 new models with a new nine-speed transmission by the end of 2017.
Chevrolet will see four models debut with the new transmission throughout the year. The new nine-speed transmission offers a three percent increase in fuel economy over the older six-speed automatic transmission. Automakers are adding more gears to their transmissions across the board in order to comply with federal emissions regulations.
The Chevrolet nine-speed transmission first debuted in the 2017 Malibu Premier with a turbocharged engine. The 2017 Cruze diesel, with its 1.6-liter diesel engine, will come with the new transmission as well. The 2018 Equinox, equipped with a turbocharged engine as well, will round out the first three. Chevrolet has yet to reveal the fourth model.
The other transmission, a 10-speed automatic, made its official debut in the Ford F-150 and Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 muscle car. That transmission is designed for performance in rear-wheel drive vehicles while the nine-speed transmission brings increased fuel economy in front-wheel drive models.
