In June of 2014, Chevrolet launched its built-in OnStar 4G LTE Wi-Fi technology. Since then, customers have been rapidly increasing their usage of the service. And, the biggest jump was in the last six months of 2016. In fact, in that time, Chevy owners used nearly as much data as they had in the previous two years.
Because of this huge jump in popularity and usage, Chevrolet has announced a new unlimited OnStar 4G LTE Wi-Fi plan. This plan will only cost $20 per month, making it an affordable choice for many families. There are also other plans for less frequent users, including data passes of 250MB per day for $5 and 20GB over 12 months for $150.
Alan Batey, president of GM North America and global head of Chevrolet, said, “With the most affordable unlimited 4G LTE data plan in the auto industry, the widest availability of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and new connected services like OnStar AtYourService, our momentum can only grow.”
Chevrolet introduced the Malibu in 1964 as a variant of their Chevelle car, which at the time was a midsize vehicle with rear-wheel drive. Since then, the Malibu has become an iconic and long-lasting nameplate for the brand and has now passed the ten million mark—and Chevrolet Malibu production isn’t slated to stop any time soon.
2016 Chevy Malibu
As said above, the Malibu has its roots as a midsize, rear-wheel-drive car, which is a sharp contrast to its modern design as a small, family-friendly sedan with front-wheel drive. After the Malibu’s debut in 1964, a second and third generation of the Malibu and Chevelle were released in subsequent years, until the Chevelle was dropped in favor of a significantly smaller Malibu in 1978.
The Malibu did, however, take a hiatus from 1983 until 1997, which is when an updated Chevy Malibu made its appearance that was closer to the car we are familiar with today. This version had finally attained that sedan style and front-wheel drive, and over the next decade or so held its own on the market against other family-oriented cars.
The Malibu is returning once again in 2016 with a new powertrain, new style, and new tech, and Chevrolet is even including a hybrid variant to appeal to the younger, more eco-friendly crowd. Malibu production will most likely continue for years to come, and the ten-million-car milestone only proves the vehicle’s longevity.
Get ready to meet one of the most fuel-efficient mid-sized sedans! Introduced during the 2015 New York Auto Show and coming to market in the spring of 2016, Chevrolet will offer a hybrid option to its Chevy Malibu lineup that will get a class-leading 45mpg combined city and highway mileage rating.
“We’re bringing a hybrid to the midsize segment to compete,” said Jesse Ortega, Chevrolet Malibu chief engineer. “We understand this is a very competitive, significant battle. But we think we’re very well-armed for this battle.”
Under the hood, the 2016 Malibu hybrid features a direct injection 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine that works in tandem with a two-motor drive unit, which is a modified version of the one found in Chevy’s 2016 Volt and gives the dual powered Malibu the ability to reach 182hp. The 1.5 kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack is capable of powering the hybrid Malibu up to 55miles per hour on electricity with the gasoline power kicking in when higher speeds are necessary.
